Doesn't look anything like the example template without major code editing

I am having some issues: When compared to the example page, my template doesn’t seem to have the options available to edit like the example page. For instance, I cannot get my menu items to be centered on the page, they are left aligned. I cannot delete my sidebar entirely. I cannot make my website title lowercase as shown in the example, even though it is written in lowercase on my dashboard. I cannot get the slidebar to work, or the boxes to post 3 in a row, or the content to show up on the entire page and not just the left side. Am I doing something wrong? Everything I am reading says you have to edit the CSS but I purchased this template because I liked the look, not because I wanted to create my own website from scratch and write new code. Please help. Thanks.
